Life As An Independent Artist

I play music because I love it with every inch of me.  And I pursue a career as a musician because it is my DREAM job.  I love everything about it from the feeling of being on stage playing music to all of the amazing fans and musicians I get to meet along the way.  I’ve been making my way as a solo artist for about 5 years now, and I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what a learning curve I’ve experienced thus far.

The music business is a crowded industry.  I often get frustrated by just how much GREAT music is out there.  It’s becoming so easy for musicians to post their talent on the internet for the world to see that today we’re just bombarded with sources for good music from every angle (which is why I’m often frustrated by what kind of crap makes it into the top 40… but that’s another conversation).  So as a solo artist fighting for the attention of already overwhelmed music fans, how do I stand out from the clutter and convince you (and all of the important music executives I’d love to impress) that my music is worth clicking the play button?

There’s no good answer to that question.  I’ve been learning along the way and trying to improve my methods as I go.  But if there’s anything I’ve learned, it’s that the best way to spread the word about my music is through you–my fan, friend, reader, whatever.  For some reason, I got your attention.  I don’t know if it’s because I know you personally, because you heard my music and like it, or because you’re bored and on Facebook and you stumbled into this blog post, but you’re here.  And while your friends may not take my word for it that my music is worth your time and your support, they usually will take yours.  That’s why I appreciate your support more than anything else.  When all else fails, it’s my fans that will allow me to keep doing what I love.

So, thank you for coming to shows, for liking my Facebook page, for listening to my music on Spotify or my CD in a car with a friend.  Thank you for being the best asset I have and for believing in me.   I won’t let you down.

All of my love,

CK
